Botox Q&A

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a cosmetic injectable derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In small doses, it’s used to weaken or paralyze muscles.

Botox can treat a variety of issues, but Dr. Malafis uses it to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles on the face. Dynamic wrinkles occur as a result of repeated muscle movements such as smiling, frowning, or squinting.

Once injected, Botox goes to work blocking muscle signals from reaching the nerves in your face. Ultimately, this allows them to relax, minimizing their appearance and restoring your youthful appearance.

What types of wrinkles can Botox treat?

Dr. Malafis regularly administers Botox to minimize the appearance of several types of wrinkles, including:

  • Frown lines
  • Wrinkles around the eyes
  • Horizontal creases on the forehead
  • Lines at the corners of the mouth

He also uses Botox to improve the appearance of indentations on the skin of the chin, sometimes referred to as “cobblestone” markings.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is safe and well-tolerated, but some people do experience mild side-effects. Potential complications include:

  • Mild pain or swelling
  • Bruising at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach
  • Temporary eyelid drooping

You might also experience tingling or numbness near or around the site of injection.

Am I a good candidate for Botox?

Only a qualified medical provider like Dr. Malafis can determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment with Botox.

Following a review of your medical history, discussion of your goals for treatment, and in-office exam, he develops a custom treatment plan to align with your individual needs.

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have neurologic disease, you won’t qualify for injections with Botox. During your initial consultation, make sure to answer all of Dr. Malafis’ questions honestly.

Does Botox provide permanent results?

The wrinkle-defying results of Botox aren’t permanent, but they do last an average of three to four months. You’ll know it’s time to schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Malafis when wrinkles and fine lines reappear on the surface of your skin.

If wrinkles or fine lines leave you feeling self-conscious, Botox provides a safe and affordable treatment option that can boost your confidence and self-esteem. To request your consultation at Master Dental today, call the office or click the online scheduling tool.
