Crowns Q&A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap used to cover chipped, cracked, or decaying teeth. It envelopes the entire portion of your tooth above the gum line and prevents further damage from taking place. In addition, crowns improve your chewing and biting abilities, allowing you to eat without pain.

Why would I need a dental crown?

There are several reasons you might need a dental crown. Dr. Malafis regularly uses crowns to:

  • Protect weak teeth
  • Restore broken or worn down teeth
  • Cover teeth with large fillings
  • Hold dental bridges in place
  • Cover dental implants

He also uses dental crowns to improve the appearance of misshapen or severely discolored teeth.

What is the process for getting a new dental crown?

Traditional dental crowns require a series of at least two appointments, but Dr. Malafis offers same-day crowns using the CEREC milling machine. This means you can receive your new crown in just one appointment.

First, Dr. Malafis conducts an oral exam, reviews your medical history, and asks you about the symptoms you’re experiencing. Next, he takes a series of digital X-rays to get a better look at your tooth roots and jawbone. He also takes digital photos using cutting-edge technology to get a closer view of your affected tooth.

If you have an infection, Dr. Malafis might recommend a root canal before moving forward. However, if there’s no infection present, he can start right away. Dr. Malafis administers a local anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums and carefully prepares your tooth to receive your new crown.

Then, he takes digital impressions of your tooth. He uploads these impressions to the CEREC milling machine. The machine manufactures a custom-crown that mimics the color and light-reflecting properties of your natural tooth enamel. Once the machine finishes, Dr. Malafis bonds your new crown in place using dental cement.

How do I care for my dental crowns?

You care for your dental crowns like you would your natural teeth. Dr. Malafis recommends brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and visiting Master Dental every six months for a professional cleaning and exam. You should also avoid bad habits such as biting your nails or chewing on ice cubes. With proper care, dental crowns can last for 10-15 years.
